Charging Your EV at Home: Wallbox, Costs and Tips

Your own charging option is the biggest comfort gain with an electric car. If you can charge at home, you start every morning with a full battery and save the detour to a public charger.

A wallbox charges much faster and more safely than a normal household socket. Common models deliver 11 kW and fill the battery overnight with ease. The unit costs a few hundred euros depending on the model, plus installation by a qualified electrician.

Have your home wiring checked before buying. A suitable connection, a dedicated circuit and a residual-current device are essential. Tenants should clarify installation with the landlord – there is now often a legal right to it.

If you use power from your own solar system, charging is especially cheap and climate-friendly. Smart charging management automatically adapts the charging power to the solar yield.
